Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse chronic heart failure (CHF) both from a pathological and practical point of view, and more specifically what it entails in terms of physiology of the body and what basic and dramatic changes occur in the everyday life of who is affected. The figures for recent years show that there has been a large increase in cardiovascular disease which is one of the main causes of death in Italy. Amongst these we can count heart failure, which is epidemiologically becoming more widespread. It is important that people affected by CHF are looked after by a medical team that will help them both at home and in hospital. The vast majority of people affected are the elderly, which are treated by polytherapy to compensate their comorbidites. For this reason the aid of qualified nursing staff is of vital importance to help patients follow their medication and live a lifestyle suitable to that of their circumstance. Nurses will completely look after their patients by not only supporting them mentally, but socially as well. They will encourage physical activities, give advice on healthy eating habits, supervise the correct intake of medication and ultimately provide therapeutic education. Through this process, nurses guide patients along their pathological journey, in order for them to be able to live a dignified life where possible. Interviewing one patient to try to get a better understanding of the effects the illness has on everyday life of people affected by CHF brought to light the hardships patients are faced with in getting to terms with the seriousness of their illness, the difficulties in following a treatment plan, and ultimately the arduousness to change lifestyle. Nurses play a key role in helping overcome these barriers in order to continue to live a decent life.
