Abstract

The aim of the study is to observe the perceived degree of competence and management by nurses in the emergency room to patients victims of abuse, violence and injury from third parties in the operating units of the structures of the Province of Modena. The hypothesis of the study is that for the phenomenon there is not enough awareness among nurses and that there is need for further training and improvement of presented problems in order to ensure good primary nursing care to these patients, being emergency nurses those who often have the first contact with the victims. The data from ISTAT and the Ministry for Equal Opportunities shows us that the problem violence is often present in the patient population and it is therefore necessary to be prepared and ready about this type of situations that are likely to experience health professionals, such as nurses. It has conducted a Qualitative Survey Sample and, after collection of the number of qualified nurses with an active employment contract at the facilities of the emergency room of the Province of Modena, by means of a questionnaire with the selected sample, data is collected between the months of June 2016 and September 2016. Processing the data, it appears that there is a desire, on the part of nurses, to carry out further training courses on how to ask the questions, in this patient population, during the assessment phase of the entrance to the emergency department and this is the demand to improve the situation with regard to language barriers, that make it difficult for nurses to communicate with the patient about these types of problems. Further difficulties of managing the problem could be due to the possession of a type of study rather than another and the age of the sample examined, but for this type of analysis it is necessary to perform further studies
