Abstract
Delirium is a syndrome characterized by acute onset of fluctuating disturbance in
consciousness. Its an unknow disturbance for many people and it requieres a work
of education and specifical training so that is received, recognized and treated
appropriately. The epidemology of the phenomenon doesnt give space for
neglicence: in every setting there is an high impact which reaches up to 80% in the
intensive care units. Delirium is also associated with an increase of lenght of stay, an
increase of costs,a grater risk of mortality and with long-term cognitive impairment.
This study aims to analyze the disturbance through a literature review and to
collaborate for create a protocol for the management of the patient with delirium.
This protocol will be useful for healthcare workers in a critical care unit of a
Modenese structure. The first step for the preparation of this protocol consists of a
detailed analysis of the patients who developed delirium after cardiac surgery inside
the ICU and understand who are patients fragile for the occurrence of the disorder.
Those data will be used in the second phase, which consists to use non-drug methods
and reduce the incidence of the disorder but the ultimate aim is to develop a
management protocol for cardiochirurgical patients with postoperative delirium.
