Abstract
During the admission in intensive care unit, many patients exibit alteration of
glycemia, with consequent hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is linked to stress due to
critical illness, to medication and to invasive intervention that patients undergo in the
intensive care unit. The increased level of blood glucose , which may be severe or
mild, short or long term, produces a significant increase in mortallity, sickness and
increased recovery time. For this reason it's imperative to use an operating protocol
for the management of glycemia, to render the work of the entire team effective,
efficient and homogeneous. My thesis aims to compare two different protocols: the
paper-based protocol, used by the intensive care unit of Carpi's hospital “Ramazzini”,
and the computerized decision support system used by the intensive care unit of
Baggiovara's hospital NOCSAE. The protocol were compared through data
collection, of the strenghts and weacknesses of each one. The comparison becomes
important to assess which system is the most effective, in order to standardize the
management of glycemia in the intensive care units at provincial level, in order to
ensure patients the best level of care.
