Abstract

The aging population, chronic and degenerative diseases and multimorbidity require treatments intended for the well-being and quality of patient and his family's life. Palliative Care consists in these treatments. This thesis is a qualitative study and its aim is to analyze nurse's skills in giving assistance to patient suffering from a incurable disease and his family, through the help of other health practitioners and following the principles of palliative care, investigating when and in what manner it may be possible to extend the use of such treatments and in which care settings. Texts, documents and databases like PubMed, Medic Journal Campus, Journal of Geriatrics and Gerontology, official site of WHO, Ministry of Health, Emilia-Romagna Region, Istat, IPASVI, SICP and Hospital Vall d'Hebron, were consulted  for data research. Home care has always been the best place to apply the principles of palliative care. For this reason this study takes the example of the reality of Carpi home care, while in order to examine in depth the applicability of such treatments in different places of assistance, it refers to the palliative care model of  Emilia-Romagna Region and to the intensive care unit of the Vall d'Hebron hospital located  in Barcelona. This study revealed that basic training in palliative care of the multidisciplinary team members should be more and more promoted in order to recognize patients in need of such treatment, particularly that of nurses who work in different contexts. Nurses can consult other specialists in palliative care who help both operators and patients in critical moments thanks to their training, skill and experience.
