Abstract

The Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) have an incidence of 2-9 per 1000 infants born alive, following an event of perinatal asphyxia. Currently the most used treatment to reduce the long-term damage and mortality is therapeutic hypothermia. Within this script I will explain what the HIE is, the functions of therapeutic hypothermia and the fundamental role of the nurse during this therapeutic process and in the relationship with the parents of the newborn. Finally, will be presented a case of an infant treated with therapeutic hypothermia and related nursing care process with the taxonomy NANDA, NOC and NIC. I have chosen to deal with this topic, despite the literature referring to the role of nurses is limited, because I found interesting that it can reduces brain damage and the resulting brain disorders to HIE (cerebral palsy, epilepsy and other disabilities such as learning disabilities), the importance of the nurse's role and that there are ongoing studies that associate therapeutic hypothermia to other therapies to improve outcomes. I used books and secondary databases for literature search: PubMed, Google scholar, Elsevier Journals and gray literature, using the keywords: Hypoxic-Ischemic Enchepalopaty, Baby Cooling, Neonatal Nurse, Therapeutic Hypothermia, Neonate, Parents, Ipotermia Terapeutica, Asfissia Neonatale.
