Abstract
Aim. The principal aim of this thesis work to investigate what are the general nursing competencies most frequently used,by the nurses who work for AUSL home care services in Modena and its province. Materials and methods. The study has been conducted by using of Nurse Competence Scale, a validated tool used in Italian hospital wards, to enable nurses to self-assess their own level of competency and their frequency use, divided in seven sections. Results. 51 Modena's AUSL nurses submitted to the NCS, with an overall average score of 2.25±0.97 (on likert 4-point scale from 0 to
3), wich symbolizes the frequency use of competencies. The most elevated results are associated to the competencies concerning the
role of "helping role"; the least used competencies in terms of frequency are those related to "ensuring quality".
Conclusion. The results highlight a high frequency of use of generic competencies within the home care services, especially those
related to the relational sphere. Despite its subjective nature, The Nurse Competence Scale allows to create a mapping of the
peculiar competencies of the nursing profession; further studies are needed to investigate the possibility of providing a starting point
for targated training programs.
