Abstract
This study examines the main techniques used to treat psychological and behavioral symptoms of dementia and delirium. It focuses on the effects of these non-pharmacological techniques, especially on the multidimensional evaluation, the creation of a therapeutic environment and the multisensorial stimulation used to prevent and handle these conditions. The sources examined come from the national library service and the main online database to ensure updated evidence of this topic. I reported two cases in our area where these techniques have been used on patients affected by delirium and/or dementia. It became clear that the multisensorial stimulation called Snoezelen is effective to prevent and treat these symptoms, but still needs to be studied in detail to improve its beneficial effects. Further and more detailed research is necessary, especially on the techniques used and the most appropriate training for medical providers. If managed in the wrong way the multisensorial stimulation snoezelen will remain a mere distraction for the patients, without any therapeutic value.
