Abstract
41 persons per 100,000 inhabitants in Europe are annually affected by extra-hospital cardiac arrest while in North America about 52 cases per 100,000 inhabitants are reported each year. Therapeutic hypothermia is a treatment that can improve survival and neurological oucome in patients with cardiac arrest, and requires the progressive reduction in body temperature between 32 and 36°C for at least 24 hours. The treatment can be divided into 3 phases namely induction, maintenance and heating.
This paper aims to provide information about this type of treatment and to demonstrate the importance of the nurses role in the management of these patients, who may suffer many complications. It is therefore imperative the creation of a personalized care plan to respond holistically to the patient's needs. That is why the last part of this paper presents a standardized care plan, realized by using the taxonomies of nursing science NANDA-I, NOC and NIC, open to possible amendments, which might be used in the management of these patients.
