Abstract

Purpose: A preliminary study, approved by Local Ethics Committee (October 21, 2015), to validate among patients hospitalized in a psychiatric ward the Patient Dignity Inventory (PDI), a 25-items questionnaire developed to investigate the perception of dignity among cancer patients.
Materials and methods: After having modified 2 items, we administered the Italian version of PDI at the discharge from a public psychiatric ward (Service Psychiatric Diagnosis and Treatment located in the NOCSAE of Az. USL-Modena). We collected the demographic and clinical variables of our sample. We statistically analysed PDI scores, performing Cronbach's alpha coefficient and factor analysis (major component analysis followed by orthogonal and oblique rotation). We concomitantly administered to our sample other symptom and functioning rating scales, to analyse the PDI concurrent validity. We analysed the correlation between the PDI total scores with selected demographic and clinic variables (multiple linear regression) to assess predictive validity.
Results: With a response rate of 93% we obtained a mean PDI score of 48,58 (+/-21,11DS), showing good level of dignity preservation. The 25 PDI items showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient= 0,94%). The factorial analysis showed three factors which explained more than 80% of total variance with good internal consistency. The PDI and the three factors scores were statistically significantly correlated with Ham-D and Ham-A but not with other scales. Some selected variables presented statistically significant correlation with the PDI score at multiple linear regression.
Conclusion: Our preliminary research suggests that PDI can be reliable tool to detect patients' dignity experience in a psychiatric setting, up to now little investigated, helping professionals to improve quality of care and patients to accept treatments.
