Abstract

"The violence inflicted upon us by others is often less painful than the violence we inflict upon ourselves" (cit. Francois De La Rochefoucauld).
Self-harm is a reality which exists since the ancient times, often ignored or confused with other pathologies, a reality which today needs to be faced in all its facets, from the risks to the care needs it requires. This disorder, which is steadily increasing especially among teenagers, is very destabilizing and involves not only the physical sphere, but also the psychological one, drastically reducing the quality of life, so that the individual is caught between the suicidal ideation and the true act.

Through a careful review of the literature, it is clear that many nurses need more informations and training about self-harm.
In many diagnostic manuals, self-harm is often listed as a symptom of borderline personality disorder, but not everyone who harm themselves answer to this diagnosis. The reasons which lead the individual to self-harm are various and may not be related to mental health conditions (Hawton et al 2006).

In my thesis I will present a case report which I followed at the Villa Igea Hospital with its Taxonomy schedule NANDA-I, NOC and NIC.
