Abstract

Day Surgery is a model of nursing care that allows people undergoing surgical operations or diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to return home on the same day.
This model is currently widespread on an international scale; however, in Italy, it has been struggling for years to become established and achieve the current results.
Even more so, the implementation of such model, also in paediatric healthcare settings, has faced several obstacles despite being aware of the many benefits that children and their families could draw from it.
Nurses are healthcare professionals who are responsible for taking care of patients and paly a fundamental role even in organisational issues within the Day Surgery setting.
Nurses do not only provide pre-operational and post-operational care but they also offer both psychological and informational support aimed at hearting parents and children, thus trying to make their experience as positive as possible.
This essay reports various studies on an international level which show those nursing actions that greatly reduce anxiety in children and prove how important are nurses in paediatric Day Surgery.
This essay also intends to analyse the experience developed at the paediatric surgical unit of Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Policlinico of Modena, and especially the paediatric Day Surgery experience, in order to compare it with the international guidelines and reflect on any possible actions that might be suggested for the improvement of Day Surgery procedures.
