Abstract

In this paper it was desired to investigate the characteristics of intraosseous access and peripheral access such as field of use, the infused drugs, the time to reach peak plasma concentration, the infusion rate, the duration, the time of insertion, the success rate of insertion on the first attempt, the pain and infusion in the listing. They are then compared the two types of access according to the test parameters to highlight if the intraosseous access is valid since the peripheral access and if there is a better device for intraosseous infusion of the other.
To do this it has reviewed the scientific literature by searching Cinahl, PubMed, UpToDate and reference texts using as keywords: “vascular access”, “peripheral vascular access”, “intraosseous infusion”, “IO/comparison”, “IO/Manual”, BIG, FAST, EZ-IO, IO/recommendations.
The evidence found in the literature are not opposed to the use intraosseous access, especially in emergency/urgency , indeed place emphasis on its importance and its effectiveness. The most widely used devices appears to be the EZ - IO. Less frequently used the device BIG, FAST and manuals needles. The comparison made it possible to emphasize that the intraosseous access is not just a simple alternative, but it is perfectly equivalent, and particularly advantageous when it is difficult to infuse fluids and drugs administered quickly and safely with on peripheral venous.
