Abstract

Renal transplantation is now the most complete form of replacement terminal chronic renal failure therapy. To be considered suitable for transplantation one has to undergo a series of tests that need to rule out any diseases, incompatible with the transplant or with anti-rejection drugs that the patient must take for life after surgery. After kidney transplantation, the patient must stick to a strict regimen that must also be accompanied by proper nutrition and regular physical activity that serve to keep up the quality of life and avoid the occurrence of serious complications that can be fatal. The nurse plays a key role during all the phases that characterize the kidney transplant: from the inclusion on the waiting list until discharge of the patient. The assistance activity is divided on the recognition, monitoring, prevention and solution of the problems of post-transplant, with particular reference to the late complications. In addition, to reduce the incidence of rejection, infection or other complications, the nurse is required to perform an educational activity that provides the patient and family members the basic information relating to the change of life to be implemented for the success of the transplant.
