Abstract

Sleep disorders are common in children with cancer commonly hospitalized school age, but a poor quality of sleep has high impact on the quality of life of these individuals. Therefore, it is important that a nurse understands the risks and consequences that may result in a bad rest, especially that knows how to act in front of a patients with this type of problem, both from the practical point of view that relational.

Objective: Analyze how the hospitalization can form the basis of a model of altered sleep, fucusing between quality of sleep at home and during hospitalization.
Materials and methods: The Sleep Disturbances Scale for Children, a validated questionnaire was administered to 12 children with pathology oncohematology, undergoing chemotherapy, hospitalized for a minimum of three nights at the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit of the Policlinico of Modena.
Results: The partecipation in the study was unanimous; the averege age of the study simple 10.4 years. The results show that, the hospitalization causes a delay in falling sleep and a quantity of sleep dropped sharply. The data also show the presence of nightmares and daytime sleepiness, this can be blamed on the change in the child's day routine and frequent nighttime awakening.The hospitalization, therefore, causes a change in the caracteristics of sleep, negatively affecting the quality of life, growth and physiological healing process.
Conclusions: The nurse reveals an important figure because it can intervene so that the sleep patterns of young patients is constant and regular and it can provide the necessary support to the family, but the efforts to implement and improve are still many. It should, therefore, engage, from a change in the organizational model, in order to ensure these children a better quality of life.
