Abstract
Organ transplantation represents the standard of care and is irreplaceable in certain diseases (lifesaving liver, heart, lungs) while in other diseases is the only way to improve the survival and quality of life (kidney transplantation, pancreas transplantation) .Notwithstanding these advantages, however, the possibility to perform a transplant is strongly limited by the availability of organs. The demand for transplantation is superior by far to the availability of donated organs with consequent lengthening of the waiting lists and increasing of the number of eligible patients.
The dissemination of information on transplants must therefore be strengthen by the media, and the training of health at any levels and the removal of any obstacles to the identification of brain dead donors.
Recently conducted international study show a limited knowledge of the problems of organ donation but also the desire of medical students of knowing more about it, and of having this incuded between the topics of university education.
This would permit to the same subjects, after graduation, to raise awareness on citizenship in favor of the activities of organ donation, as well as to facilitate the increase of transplants procedures.
The purpose is to show how many students of Medicine and Nursing of Modena and Reggio Emilia have knowledgeof procedures and how much availability for the donation of organs and tissues is there.
We still do not hear much about donation of organs and tissues, but for many people the organ transplant may be the only way to live.
