Abstract

Despite the undeniable accomplishments of the last fifteen years, the intrahospital transport of critically ill patients is still to be considered a high risk
procedure. To prevent possible mishaps, it is of paramount importance that intensive care workers (and in particular nurses) are able to manage and direct the transport through all of its phases, from the preparation of the patient and the equipment to the actual exit from the intensive care unit. To ensure that the transport is conducted properly, it is necessary to be up to date with the latest guidelines and recommendations. To reduce the effect of adverse events, checklists have widely been adopted, ranging from pre-transport phase (patient and equipment preparation), to the transport phase (patient management outside the intensive care unit) and to the patient’s eventual return inside the intensive care unit. To prevent possible adverse events, it is important to foresee complications, judging by both existing studies pertaining to the case at hand and the condition of each specific patient. It will fall to the nurse to be able to evalute the patient, with special attention not only to the specific clinical conditions, but also to the equipment involved. For example, the presence of several infusion pumps, or the use of a mechanic ventilar, can dramatically increase the risk of complications.
