Abstract

Family-Centered Care is a nursing practice that supports the child and family, through a process of involvement and participation, supported by empowerment and negotiation.
Goal: to evaluate the importance that a population of nurses working in a pediatric area give to the elements of FCC and to understand to what extent those elements are applied in practice.
Materials and methods: a smaller version of  Family-Centered Care Questionnaire administered to all nurses serving in pediatrics units of  Modena’s hospitals during the experimental period.
Results: 55 nurses participated in the study, mean age 39.9 years (sd 8.5), length of service in pediatrics 13.7 years (sd 10.9). The concepts of which is found greater application in practice are those related to the recognition of the specificity of each family and the full sharing with the parents of the informations regarding the child; whereas the elements perceived as applied least are those referring on attention to the developmental needs of the child and at all levels of the organization of the assistance and consider the family's needs globally, including emotional and social. The concepts that nurses consider most important are those that they apply more and those that relate to ensure emotional support to nurses; instead those related to promoting support among parents, are considered less important, along with the consideration in a holistic manner of the needs of  family.
Conclusions: The data show that there is widespread awareness among nurses about the importance of various aspects of the FCC, but in some cases the difficulties of their implementation in practice. The road is still long for the application of this nursing practice in Italy, since we live in an environment that in terms of organization and culture still does not respond to the requirements of the FCC.
