Abstract
In this document it was decided to expand upon the importance of providing adequate nursing care to the caregivers of cancer patients in the terminal phase of the disease; with the objective of proposing a practical tool in support of that figure. A literature review was carried out, by consulting primary and secondary databases, catalogs, magazines and Internet resources, which produced useful means to provide assistance in this area. The oncological disease and the different stages in which it can be distinguished are described, with their problems and feelings expressed by the caregiver. A profile of the caregiver is defined, with reference also to the current regulatory, both at national and regional levels; and the definition of its role, the burden of care, physical, psychological and emotional problems associated with (including the burden) are indicated. The educational role of the nurse towards the caregiver is then defined, along with the possible training activities and information directed to him. Finally the last chapter focuses the attention to the terminal phase of the disease and any palliative care: in particular a literature search was conducted to identify what symptoms are most frequent. With the aim to help patients and their families to better cope with the terminal phase of the disease an information brochure is proposed. It includes a series of practical suggestions that can be useful to the caregiver to deal with the situation at hand, and to deal with the daily life problems connected to the management of the symptoms present in this delicate stage of the disease.
