Abstract

In the last years, admissions to Emergency Departments (ED) have been progressively increasing; most of them though are patients with uncomplicated and non urgent problems, who should refer to primary care, outside the hospital. This situation leads to overcrowding and increased waiting times before the physician examination, which can have a negative impact on care quality. From the international scene some models in less severe patients management have been suggested, like “Fast Track” and “See and Treat”; these work by entrusting patients with non critical symptoms to experienced and properly trained nurses who manage the whole treatment process following specific protocols.
The aim of my work is to analyze these new management models, after a brief introduction on ED and triage organization, also referring to some national experiences and the conclusions drawn from them found in literature.
