Abstract
Problem: in Italy permanently lives nearly five million foreigners with a background of traditions, values and cultures unfamiliar to us. This situation has an impact on the National Health System with new demands and psycho-socio-cultural needs to which the nursing staff has to deal with.
Aim: this study aims to understand whether the nursing care currently practiced is consistent and sensitive to the cultural diversity of the patients assisted through the direct experience acquired by students of the Degree in Nursing during their periods of clinical training and what could be the improvements on training to equip the students for greater competence and effectiveness in helping a person with different culture.
Results: I identified seven conceptual categories during the focus group process. (1) Communication difficulties; (2) Transcultural nursing secondary role; (3) Relational difficulties between nurse and patient with different culture; (4) Equal assistance and care on the "physical" part; (5) Improving knowledge about other cultures and awareness of our own cultural filter; (6) Building a relationship of respect and trust; (7) Human approach and sensitive care.
Conclusion: the discipline of transcultural nursing has to be strengthened in the Degree in Nursing. Students learning that cultural differences are an asset and a value in a modern society should become aware of their unconscious biases and relativity of their own culture in order to provide a nursing care that respects the needs and feelings of people with different culture.
