Abstract

In the present work I have set the goal of going to investigate what it mean for a nurse of emergency room suffering a verbal and or physical violence by a patient or a companion during the work shift, I also investigated what are, according to the experience of the respondents, the causes that trigger this event and what could be the possible solutions to reduce this effect. In order to study this phenomenon in depth it was performed a qualitative research in a phenomenological way using the semi-structure interview, which allowed me to analyze and describe the experiences of nurses through their own words. The study took place at the emergency room of Mirandola, a small hospital reality that, at the same time, covered a vast area of the Modena district. From this research it has been possible to learn a variety of topics which are turned to be for the most part compliant with those found in the international literature analyzed. The interviews have showed that the feeling that the violent event triggers in the nurse is very often a sense of frustration and helplessness. The main causes which, according to respondents, lead patients or relatives to become violent towards them are the long waits in the waiting room and altered condition by alcohol or drugs, but also the lack or poor communication of nurses. The solutions available to reduce the risk of violence extract from the interviews include specific training on the relationship for nurses and health education to patients and relatives who access to the emergency rooms. In the interviews it is discussed also the topic of the supervisory, staff augmentation and psychological help. A collaboration between management and employees may be possible to decrease the incidence of violence in the emergency room?
