Abstract
The aim of this systematic review of the literature is to study the transient neonatal hypothyroidism caused by maternal exposure to antiseptics iodine during pregnancy and lactation. Review Methods: the research was done in databases Embase, Medline and CINAHL according to the instructions of the Cochrane handbook for systematic reviews of interventions. Two authors analyzed studies independently. Results: Only three studies were included in the review. All studies associets maternal application of povidone-iodine and the increase of the concentration of iodine in breast milk, blood and urine of the newborn. Two studies demostrate the correlation between exposure to povidone-iodine and thyroid hormone dysfunction. Conclusions: This review suggests, waiting for more studies, to be very cautious in the use of substances iodine in the perinatal period, regarding the correlation shown so far on the effects of iodine overload in term newborn.
