Abstract
This thesis deals with the nursing support given to a child operated on a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) during the postoperative period. As explained in the first chapter, VSD is a congenital heart disease characterized by pulmonary congestion with the risk of respiratory infections, bacterial endocarditis and congestive heart failure in the most difficult cases; all these situations are associated with a high mortality rate. If a surgical operation is needed, the Intensive Care Unit takes on the responsibility of the young patient immediately after the operation.
In the second chapter, It is described the Open Intensive Care Unit, where the child operated on VSD spends the first 72 hours after the surgery.
In the end, in order to describe in the best possible way the care support, it is presented a case. The nursing care to the child affected by VSD in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the support to the patients family and the planning of the nursing care are displayed according to the NANDA-I, NIC and NOC Taxonomy.
The most important aspect concerning the nursing care to the young patient operated on VSD is the stable presence of the patients family at the hospital as in an Open Intensive Care Unit.
The parent is given the possibility to carry out his/her role even within in a critical context like this; in this way, both figures, the parent and the son, appear more calm and willing to collaborate.
The parent helps the child to recover after the surgery and to bear the difficult period during which the child is hospitalized.
