Abstract
This project is aimed at comparing two types of devices, namely the peripheral venous catheter and the intraosseous access in an emergency context, such as the cardiac arrest, during which drugs and fluids need to be administered extremely quickly. A bibliographic research has been performed within the main databases such as Cochrane, Library, PubMed, by using key words as follows: intraosseous, intraosseus access, intraosseus device, intraosseus infusion, vascular access, cardiac arrest. All the studies analysed enabled us to assess the devices for the intraosseous access, such as B.I.G, EZ-IO and FAST 1, and the differences between them and the peripheral venous catheter. The comparison parameters utilised have been as follows: the percentage of success, the pharmacokinetics, the ease of utilisation and the time of insertion. The analysis of literature highlighted that intraosseous access is a valuable alternative. The EZ-IO seems to be the best device, thanks to the fact its utilisation is simple, safe and quick, in respect of getting intraosseous access. Further investigations need to be performed in order to assess the effectiveness of intraosseous access compared to vascular access.
