Abstract
Starting from the high incidence of breast cancers on the Italian scene, it is important for a nurse to know how to approach to these people, from the practical and especially relational point of view. It has been thought which can be the reaction of a woman who has been diagnose a breast cancer, and from this point it comes the idea of this thesis, which is to analyze how a breast reconstruction affects the quality of life.
The study was carried out at Surgery ward of “Ramazzini” Hospital (Carpi), where it has been chosen a sample of women who undergone a mastectomy with reconstruction and it’s been administered to them a questionnaire called BREAST-Q. The results shows that they are quite satisfied with their journey. Afterwards, it’s been made a comparison with another sample of women who undergone mastectomy without reconstruction. There are some differences about the psychosocial and sexual sphere. However, both groups have expressed that the quality of the hospital’s team was great. It’s hoped that this analysis can be used as soon as possible in Italy, already utilized in the USA and UK too.
It is a basic element to establish a relationship of trust and empathy, even more because this condition can lead to fear and anxiety: the patient who receives the diagnosis, sometimes without any preliminary signs, has to face not only physical changes but major socio-psychological implications.
The nurse’s importance in this team it’s underline by the fact that this figure is able to treat a patient both considering his physical and psychological aspects.
