Abstract
Objective . The thesis aims to analyze the qualitative-quantitative features, limits and advantages of the current model of nursing handover. Methods and materials. The study includes an accurate bibliographical research followed by a comparative and cross study, with a mixed methodological approach that integrates both qualitative and quantitative datas. For the survey, 3 different wards of a public hospital in Modena area have been selected. For each ward, during a 3 months period, 4 nursing handover have been audio recorded. The handovers have been realized in morning/afternoon shift change and refer to a total of 209 patients. They have been transcribed accurately and their content analyzed (frequency, kind and modality of information given), inserting the results obtained in an analysis table. Results . The analysis highlights 3 main critical aspects of nursing handover: the non holistic approach, the incomplete sharing of the correct assistance process and the lack of a regular content structure, with the deriving discordances and mistakes in terms of presentation, style and language. Conclusions. Given the results of the study, it is evident the importance of an effective transmission of information. Mistakes are recurring and potentially damaging for the patient and for the whole assistance process. For this reason it is crucial to intervene with a proper university education and a constant updating of all people employed in the sector. This may lead to a deeper awareness towards the topic, and to the application of all the improving strategies listed in the literature, further broadening the research in this field.
