Abstract

The alcohol abuse is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the western world. From the computer database of Servizio Psichiatrico Diagnosi Cura (SPDC) dell'AZ.USL. Modena, we retrospectively collected all the hospitalized patients due to alcohol abuse from 2005 to 2012. From this group, we  extrapolated all out-patients treated by Servizio di Dipendenze Patologiche (SDP)
(n=146) at 31-12-2014 and statistically analyzed selected variables concerning their demographic and clinical characteristics. We also formulated plans of nursing care for the most frequent alcohol related disorders. In our sample, consisted of twice as many men than women, we highlighted significant differences between males and females: the average age of men was lower than that of women; almost half of men was single, whereas women were more often separated or divorced; men had a poorer adherence to therapeutic and rehabilitative programs, with a mean age of taking charge by both psychiatric and addiction services significantly less than women. One third of our total sample abused of other substances, especially opiates. 95% of patients was in charge of both psychiatric and addiction services and suffered by personality disorder as prevalent psychiatric diagnosis. The age of taking charge by both psychiatric and addiction services was statistically significantly related, with a negative coefficient, to concurrent abuse of other substances, which was however correlated with an increased duration of treatment programs. Our study highlighted the complexity of alcohol-related disorders which required a multidisciplinary approach with many health professionals. Nurses can favor the continuity of care and permit a mediation among patient, his family and other health professionals.
