Abstract
Aim. The thesis is to find, through a literature research, the scientific evidence concerning the nursing management in the weaning process in adult patient undergoing mechanical ventilation, in intensive care unit. Background. Mechanical ventilation is a life-saving technology, but it has many complications that adversely affect on patient's outcomes. Is important recognize the criteria to start weaning from ventilator. The weaning process, not being tied only techincal and practical aspects, it requires an evaluation of patient's social-psychological state and equipe's organizational aspects. Method. The literature review was performed examinating databases CINHAL, UpToDate e PubMed, with the search string "weaning mechanical ventilation and nursing", considering only the sourches published from 2003 to 2014, that concerned the adult popolation apparteining to the human species. Discussion. Research has shown that the weaning process concern different aspects: interprofessional collaboration, psychological and emotional sphere of the patient, the use or not of weaning protocol. Conclusion. Research ha shown that there are much controversy between studies regarding the use of weaning protocol, because of the great heterogeneity of patient in mechanical ventilation. The weaning process is not just about the clinical practice, but also emotional factors, relational factors and psychological factors. Recent studies have not yet determined what the best approach to be implemented, so further research is needed.
