Abstract

This thesis aims to present the state of art of pediatric palliative care in Emilia Romagna. The World Health Organization defines palliative care as "the active total care of body, mind and spirit of the child, and includes the active support of the family." Home is usually the place selected and ideal for caring, as evidenced by the philosophy Family-Centered Care. The thesis will be developed starting from the definitions of palliative care referred to the children with chronical disease and life-limiting. It will show their peculiarities and problems, their needs and possible answers. The thesis will outline the main models of care (at home, Hospice or hospital) and describe our legislation about pediatric palliative care. It will highlight the main problems, such as the low number, the high variability, lack of training in structured CPP professionals, lack of communication and collaboration between pediatrician and the team nursing home care. Finally, it will define possible solutions, improvements and the economic justifications that lead the choice of de-hospitalization of the patient.
