Abstract

Since 1989, as far as mental health is concerned, the term “dual diagnosis” refers to a psychopathological context characterized by co-occurring psychiatric- and drugs-addiction disorders. The choice of this particular topic as subject of my dissertation comes from my internship experience in the dual diagnosis ward of the private hospital “Villa Igea”, in Modena. Specifically, my purpose is to underline the fundamental importance of the integration of specific treatments in therapy programs for dual diagnosis illnesses.
Firstly, starting from the elaboration of a customized nursing care plan, I will briefly examine the evolution of the role of nurses from a legislative point of view. Furthermore, I will focus on the progresses made by psychiatry in Italy after the introduction of law no. 180/78, which radically changed the approach to mental healthcare.
Secondly, I will follow with an in-depth analysis of the term “dual diagnosis”, expecially since it started being used to refer to the aforementioned psychopathological context.
Lastly, I will give a thorough account of my internship experience: how the staff takes care of the patients, how exactly separate diagnoses are made, and how specific treatments can be combined in order to create a more efficient therapy program.
