Abstract

The cauda equina syndrome (CES) is housed within the medical, orthopedic, neurological and neurosurgical  literature. It is a serious condition characterized by a loss of function of the lumbar plexus in consequence of a lesion of the spinal nerve roots located in the Cauda Equina. The compression of these roots leads to a loss of bladder, bowel and sexual functions. It's a neurosurgical emergency and should not be underestimated because it can lead to serious consequences for the patient. It is necessary to recognize the symptoms in the first 24-48 hours and intervene as soon as possible to try to avoid the loss of these functions. Sufferers of CES will have not only medical consequences, but will face psychosocial difficulties. In fact, the effect on the patient is devastating with a significant impact on daily activities, especially when bladder, bowel and sexual function are impaired. The nurse has a fundamental role in the recognition of symptoms and also in decision-making by ensuring ongoing evaluation and specific assistance to improve the quality of life of patients. Effective help could come from the identification of a nursing figure such as a case manager that, at discharge, is able to coordinate a defined and shared therapeutic plan, aimed at improving the quality of life of patients.
