Abstract
The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), also called Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS), is a special procedure that replaces the work of the heart and lungs, when these are not able to properly support all body functions. The ECMO allows the heart and lungs to recover its functionality, after an appropriate period of rest. This procedure, in fact, no needs to treat these organs, but it gives them any time to rest, to recover the ability to work effectively. The device used for this treatment, its very similar that at cardiac surgery in the open air, known as extra-corporeal circulation (CEC). However, while in this case the patients remain connected to the machine for a maximum of some minutes, in ECMO patients may continue treatment even for days and weeks. This thesis is to draw up a plan of care with standard taxonomies NANDA-I, NIC and NOC, for people treated with ECMO, with the aim to fill a gap in the Italian manuals for nurses.
