Abstract
Breast cancer in men has much in common with female breast cancer in terms of progression and treatment. However, It differs for the incidence, for the response to certain therapies and in some aspects of nursing care.
This type of cancer rarely occurs in males, approximately in 2% of cases of breast cancer and seems to be increasing. Risk factors for men include: BRCA2 mutations, Klinefelter syndrome, and other conditions of the organism that lead to a marked imbalance of estrogen. The average age of man to which breast cancer is diagnosed is 67 years. The symptoms of this the disease are the presence of a localized mass, a swollen or an ulcerated area and nipple retraction or bloody secretions.
The surgery performed on women with this condition is also adapted on man, with obvious differences in reconstructive surgery. The systemic therapy that provides better results than the other in terms of survival, is based on tamoxifen.
The role of the nurse in the management of this type of patient goes from prevention and community raising awareness, during the whole diagnostic and therapeutic phase until the rehabilitation, offering support, understanding, relief and competence to the person and his family.
