Abstract

Valvular heart diseases are widely associated with aging. Therapy is tipically surgical, since there are no drugs that can cure this type of pathologies. Untreated patients die within 5 years after the onset of symptoms, except in some cases where survival is up to 10 years (mitral stenosis). Obviously, early diagnosis improves the outcome from surgery. The first chapter of this paper describes the anatomy, physiopathology, types of treatment  and prosthetic valves. The subsequent three chapters discuss the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative nursing care in the patient respectively, highlighting psychological and physical issues and listing related interventions to deal with them. Relational activity is highly promoted: in fact, an early and well planned education favors postoperative course and allows the patient to regain control of his/her own life. Conclusions are drawn in the last chapter, where a constant update in nurse staffing level is promoted, in order to avoid as much as possible unplanned readmissions and to reduce in-hospital mortality.
