Abstract
Introduction: the incidence of extra-hospital sudden cardiac arrest is estimated to lie between 36 and 128 cases per 100.000 inhabitants every year in industrialized countries . If not promptly treated, the cardiac arrest could become irreversible. Hypothermia can be used in order to minimize neurological damages. Objectives: the study is aimed to describe the outcomes of therapeutic hypothermia during heart arrest, to value nurse into helpful processes linked treatment and also to create a comparison between total body treatment and selective brain cooling. Methods: the study is carried out on Pubmed database using key words "Therapeutic Hypotermia", "Cardiac Arrest" and "Selective Brain Cooling". After an introductive part about cardiac arrest and the history of the hypothermia, the study describes therapeutic hypotermia's periods and related complicances.
Then two nursing diagnoses have been realized according to taxonomy NANDA, NOC and NIC, the former about total body hypothermia and the latter about selective brain cooling.
Using studies' outcomes, a comparaison of cooling times has been made between the different treatments of total body hypothermia and, moreover, the two main devices used for selective brain cooling has been examinated.
