Abstract

Delirium is an episode of acute confusional state, psychotic organic origin, with fluctuating course, reversible, characterized by alterations of consciousness, memory, orientation, thinking, perception and behavior; it identifies complex multifactorial etiology. It occurs in 50-80% of elderly patients hospitalized / institutionalized, in a phase overactive, underactive, mixed, and a minor form unclassifiable, said stage subsyndromal. From the point of view of social health, is associated with a significant increase in functional disability in the long term, the length of stay, mortality and health care costs. Despite the clinical relevance, delirium remains is often not identified, or is misdiagnosed as dementia or other psychiatric disorders. The nurse's role is crucial in the prevention and treatment, where the treatment of choice is the non-drug therapy, such as Delirium Room. The prospect EBN present focuses on the importance of a multifactorial approach according to the model multicomponent intervention strategy for primary prevention and nursing management. The model is based on the integration of MIS somatic interventions, environmental and educational, the latter geared to taking charge of the care-giver through support programs and teaching strategies of both the assisted approach that effective self-management.
