Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The thesis aims to create a mirror of the current situation of self-employed (or freelance) nurses throughout Italy and more generally on the care models used.
METHOD: The analysis was done from June to July 2014, through an anonymous questionnaire sent by e-mail. The sample that have been enquired is made up of professionals. The survey notes several aspects: age of the respondents, the beginning of their careers, where they work, what type of studies they have recently achieved, and finally what method of care they apply.
RESULTS: 142 respondents from a sample of 300 units: the 41.50% are over 41 years old, the 31.70% fall in the age group between 25 and 30 years, 15.50% are in the age group between 31 and 35 years, 11.30% are in the age group between 36 and 40 years. The 34.50% were former employees, the 30.28% chose to do the free-lance career from the beginning, the 22,54% did not find work as an employee and then has chosen the profession as a fallback; the 4,93% after retiring has undertaken the free-lance career. The 55.63% is working individually, the 26.06% works in private premises, the 9.86% works for public hospital, the 2.82% for corporations. The 50,70% is working since 1 to 4 years ago, the 21.13% from 5 to 9 years, the 11.27% for over 15 years, and the 8.45% from 10 to 15 years. The 32.40% have attended to a master course, the 14.78% has played other types of update, the 8.45% have earned a master's degree. The 43,67% applies the care objectives method, the 24.65% uses the one applied by the employer, the 19.72% do not use any model in particular, the 5.63% applies the specific models treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of the findings it is possible to argue that the profession could also be a choice due to the Italian current economic conditions.
