Abstract

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive, fatal disease of unknown etiology, with a median survival of 3 years from diagnosis. The aim of the thesis is to look for the efficacy of non-pharmacological treatments in the management of patients with IPF. Objectives of non-pharmacological treatments are to promote lung function, reducing the risk of complications, increased exercise tolerance and improved quality of life.
To do this revision was made a bibliographical search of several databases: National Guidelines Clearinghouse, the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN), the Cochrane Library, Clinical Evidence, Nursing Reference Center, UpToDate, PubMed, CINAHL, Trip Database; consulted the Internet using the Google search engine, Google Scholar and Google Books. 43 articles were found, of which 24 are included in the review. The results relate to pulmonary rehabilitation, these programs allow an improvement in lung function and a decrease of dyspnea and respiratory distress. One of the most important points highlighted by the results is therapeutic education, job mainly managed by the nurse. One of the results of which proved to be more efficient is the use of support groups, during which patients can compare themselves to themselves, allowing patients and caregivers to feel less alone in dealing with disease. In conclusion, it is identified the need for a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to patient care with IPF. The fundamental role of the nurse in education and self-management of the disease and in particularly the symptoms. The review has focused on non-pharmacological treatment, such as palliative care, psychological well-being, physical therapy and respiratory support groups.
