Abstract

Pain is the leading cause of access to the Departments of Emergency-Urgency(DEU) and adequate analgesia is one of the cornerstones for effective management of the emergency. However, numerous studies have documented inadequate pain control in the setting of emergency department that recognizes  ideological causes, institutional and related to the training of professionals. It therefore becomes necessary to change the approach of professionals and patients to the pain by promoting close collaboration between various health professionals and the patient. It is necessary that the detection of the pain becomes constant as other vital signs to be treated early and taking into account the best scientific evidence and using all the tools available to the nursing profession serving as part of the emergency-urgency. In recent years, the Italian Parliament has intervened on the importance of an effective and widespread treatment of pain, with Law n.38 of 15 March 2010 and the projects of "Hospital withoutpain." A major step forward was made in different situations with the routine measurement of pain triage for all patients presenting to the emergency departmentand with the development and implementation of business protocols for the early treatment of pain triage, in autonomy by nurses specifically trained. With these powers, the nurse influence, in a decisive way, the outcome of pain treatment by detecting the symptoms of person's pain and  carrying out actions aimed at its optimal control.Training and empowerment of nurses, are therefore the key to achieving these goals.
