Abstract
The primary purpose of this thesis has been that of identifying the most frequent cases of injuries of biological risk and demonstrate how those can be avoided.
The research, has been developed into the Hospital – Univeristy Polyclinic of Modena into the Biennium 2012-2013, which consists in 270 cases divided into 185 percutaneous injuries/accidents and 85 mucocutaneous.
In the analysis developed the variables taken into consideration have been the most varied, from professional quality to seniority in the service, from the working hours to the injured part, from the contaminant agent to the method of cleaning; particularly we wondered in which of these circumstances, by using the DPI,using the new devices with security characteristics and applying the right procedures, it could have been avoided or reduced the damaged caused to the operators.
In the end of the research it seems that most part of accidents are due to human error, caused by tiredness o distraction of the operator, or by unpredictable factors due to chance; the other part of accidents,are caused by an incorrect application of procedures, due to inadequancy of training on the best ways to prevent an accident of biological risk and on the actions on making into the immediate post- exposure, or in the failure use of new devices with safety characteristics; those last, unfortunately, are available just in few departments of the Polyclinicum.
Has been shown that 95 accidents of 270 would have been avoided or would not produced the same consequences for the operator if those could have the availability of devices for security or those had been formed in a right way for the prevention and management of accidents of biological risk.
By taking into consideration those evidences, the use of these devices should be in all the hospital areas and every operator should be learned and incentivated for the right and scrupulous use of it.
