Abstract

In Italy, sudden cardiac death (SCD) affects every year more than 1,000 young people under 35 years (Del Vecchio, 2008): it is a very worrying phenomenon, taking into account its deadly occurrence in apparently healthy subjects, athletes included.

A study shows that, from 2006 January 1st  to 2012 December 31st, 592 cardiac sudden deaths in athletes were reported, with an average of 84.5 events per year.
This study also highlights a disturbing statistic: in our country, sudden cardiac death involves the amateur world significantly more than the professional one.
This is unacceptable: the sport should be a fundamental right of all citizens, as well as it should represent a true example of behavior, a great school of life with clear educational and health functions.

On the contrary, despite the mandatory controls and the diagnostic tests, we still need to witness the sudden death of young people whose aim was just to perform their right.

All of us knows what happened on April 14th in 2012, the day when a soccer player of Livorno team, Piermario Morosini, lost his life: probably this date represents  the highest moment of taking of consciousness on the need not only to equip the athletic facilities and the places with high crowding with semi-automatic defibrillators, but also to train people who have to use such devices and not only them.

The target  of  this thesis is to understand why we still have to witness similar tragedies  and, above all,  what a registered nurse, can do to contribute to the reduction of this phenomenon.
