Abstract
The present thesis aims to define the role of the school nurse in the safeguarding of the health of children suffering from chronic diseases, from diabetes mellitus type 1 in particular. A systematic literature review was conducted using the principal internet search engines: Google, Google Scholar and Google Books. Pubmed, UpToDate and Cinahl are the databases that were used most. The nursing profession, already widespread in the USA and England, yet barely known in Italy, will be presented by means of different documents. The collected data highlight a substantial increase in the number of children and teenagers suffering from chronic diseases. Therefore, a strategic integration of the diabetic child into the school context has become all the more important. Working in cooperation with parents, teaching and support staff, the school nurse could plan specific actions aimed at promoting the physical and psychological development of the child. An improvement in the quality of life, the understanding and acceptance of the disease, as well as the full social integration of the diabetic child and his family can be achieved through innovative teaching methods: Conversation Maps, stuffed animals and books.
