Abstract
This thesis aims to highlight the lack of appropriate scales in the literature for the detection of pain in psychiatric patients. It is now common knowledge that anxiety disorders seems to lower the threshold of pain as well as depression; however, there are other disorders, such as psychosis, personality disorders and somatic symptoms' disorder that seem to modify the perception of pain, although it is not yet clear in which direction and how they amend it. In addition, despite several years use of psychotropic drugs as adjuvants in pain therapy and despite extensive evidence of altered pain perception by these patients, yet little has been done. Research should be geared to find out how these patients perceive pain and how the psychiatric drug therapy, altering pain's perception, may be dangerous for patients with self-destructive tendencies.
