Abstract

The aim of this literature review was to find out  the role played by nurse in order to treat, prevent, and manage the postoperative pain for surgical patients. Surgery is always associated with tissue injury and almost all patients will experience some degree of postoperative pain after surgical interventions. Despite significant advances in the understanding of pain pathogenesis and ongoing advances in treatment options, pain continues to be undertreated in health care settings.
Proper post-operative pain management has been shown to increase the patient comfort level, help to a quick recovery of the patient physical activities thus reducing post-surgical morbidity and reduces the length of days for the patient. Despite the availability of clinical practice guidelines, effective analgesics and new technologies for drug administration, the management of postoperative pain continues to remain problematic and unsatisfactory.
Nurses play an important role in the pain management. Nurse, as important members of the team and have a unique opportunity to assess, document and continuously evaluate pain and its
treatment.
Several factors has been identified that place constraints on nurses ability to manage patients pain effectively. These factors comprise barriers that nurses themselves identify and acknowledge like lack of knowledge and skills of pain and its assessment and the reluctance by patients to report pain and to take drugs.
