Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to look for the best evidences in the scientific literature about the nursing care of the patient receiving loco-regional anaesthesia.
Databases of National Guidelines Clearinghouse, SIGN, RNAO, SNLG, New Zealand Guidelines Group, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Royal College of Nursing, UpToDate, The Cochrane Library, The Joanna Briggs Institute, PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, Canadian Medical Association, NHS EvidenceNational Library of Guidelines, had been consulted to find needed documentation by using these keywords: regional anesthesia OR regional anaesthesia AND nursing, regional anesthesia OR regional anaesthesia, local anesthesia OR local anaesthesia.
Many aspects of nursing assistance are analyzed in this thesis, from theorical basis to the practical and relational assistance.
Since loco-regional anaesthesia is a very complex procedure (with risks and complicances), the nurse must have an extended knowledge about it, about contraindications and its possibile side effects.
The fact that the patient is awake and self conscious during these procedures, represents for him a stress factor: in this case the nurse plays an important role in the patient's caring since creating an empathetic relationship with him is one of the main goals of nursing, together with education and information. A proper health education supports a better awareness about what the patient is going to been through.
Noteworthy is the fact that in Italy a nurse completely dedicated to anaesthesia doesn't exist so the assistance to the patients undergoing anesthetic procedures could be deeply studied and extended.
