Abstract

This thesis aims to research nursing students' attitudes towards nursing, in Modena University, from the beginning of their university career. This paper includes several research phases to investigate if there are differences in attitudes during students' education. This research's drawing is composed of four steps, so it can be continued throughout the degree course's duration.This study is the first phase of a longitudinal study descriptive measure the perceptions of nursing students and how they evolve during the three years of the degree program; during this phase was given a questionnaire to students before the beginning of the first formative training and the same will be distributed once again to the same cohort for the other three phases, so a questionnaire for each year, and the last will be administered shortly before the end of the course. This thesis is made of 4 parts: in the first chapter is enunciate the history of nursing, starting from the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom and the evolution of this profession in North America until in Italy. In the second chapter is described the mutation that took this profession over the years, with its changes regarding nursing education up to the present day. In the third part are exposed international literature's data about students' attitudes toward nursing, which includes several studies to measure students' inclination to undertake the nursing profession; in this chapter studies of reference authors  are exposed for the following research. in the fourth section is described the method, materials and tools used in order to determine students' attitudes and perceptions ay the beginning of their university career. Finally follow the discussion of findings with conclusions.
