Abstract
Nowadays, the heart transplant is proved to be the best option for patients who suffer from heart diseases that are not curable with any other treatment. Furthermore, it is one of the most complex surgical techniques to carry out and, particularly, its success depends on an adequate, constant and regular post-transplant nursing. Post-transplant complications might be fatal if they are not detected in time and this is the reason why the nurse plays a fundamental role. Literature provides us with information on how to prevent infections and rejection and, most of all, on the monitoring of the patient carried out by the nurse. The first part of this dissertation introduces the anatomy and physiology of the heart, the guidelines for a transplant and the diagnostic and therapeutic work-up that the patient has to go through. The following chapters contain a description of the activities that the nurse must carry out in order to guarantee both an effective and efficient nursing and a change of lifestyle that the patient is asked to carry out. The aim of this dissertation is to show the nurse's responsibilities towards the patient who underwent heart transplant and the activities they are requested to carry out in order to guarantee a good outcome for the transplant. This text also underlines the centrality of the role of the nurse in the post-transplant nursing activities and the autonomy achieved troughout the nursing period. Later on, the process of nursing is presented as well. This is a method that allows to detect the problems of the patient and the planning of the activities that need to be implemented to solve them.
