Abstract

Purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adherence to the new protocol for prevention of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) by the nursing and medical equipe of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the University Hospital Policlinico of Modena, and the effectiveness of the training course, which was attended by the same. Methods. It was a research that involved 3 different times: the first (before-test) characterized by th evaluation of the adherence tot he protocol by the equipe of the ICU, by filling a check-list, prepared on the basis of the rules of protocol, updated to guidelines of Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta;at a later time, the staff partecipated in a traning course for the uptodate of the protocol, and at a third time (after-test) the staff has been re-verified about application of the protocol. Sample. Everyone in the ICU has been evaluated. Results. At the end of the two surveys, the results were compared. Of the 14 item rated, 5 were found to be less accurate than the other and, therefore, not taken into account in the rafting of the conclusions. Conclusions. Of the remaining 9 item, 6 have reported an increase in the percentage of the behavior adhering to the rules of protocol in the after-test, while 3 have bearing a decrease in adherent behaviors. However, the percentage of non-adherent behaviors appear to be still quite high, to believe that the training course which was attended by all the staff of the ICU has not been sufficiently effective. Therefore, we recommend a strategy for the implementation of the rules of the hospital Protocol more effective.
