Abstract
Arterial punctures are performed in order to obtain blood samples for gas analysis, which gives many informations about patients quality of ventilation, acid/base equilibrium and glycaemic levels. Arterial puncture is mainly used in ER, however, this procedure is pretty painful. In order to reduce pain, its possible to use local anesthetics such as lidocaine infiltration. Patients who experienced local anesthetics before the arterial puncture reported lower level of pain than the ones who got the direct puncture without any anesthesia. However, subcutaneous lidocaine caused discomfort during injection, in fact some patients referred that the pain experienced during the administration of local anesthetic was as painful as the direct arterial puncture. Some suggestion were given to decrease the discomfort during local anesthetic application.
